Fleas and Flu…

You ever have one of those weeks?

Well I’m just getting over one of them…at least I hope to heck I am!

It started off with my friend and I finishing up painting my front porch. Didn’t catch that post? Read all about it here.

Man it turned out nice and I’m super proud of it!

Well since I live in drought ridden California I have really stopped taking care of my lawn. I really do want to remove it and have some nice drought resistance planting put in. For those of you that don’t know, I live in a mobile home and most people put in rock! Yea, that is so not me and I just refuse to do it. But I know I can have a much nicer yard than what I do have. Which right now is a little bit of lawn and a whole lot of weeds. Funny how the weeds grow super well and are nice and green and the lawn part is…well yea, brown and ugly.

Ok, so back to the story. After painting I was cleaning up and happened to look down and noticed my feet were covered…literally covered…with these teeny tiny little things. I realized by the way they were jumping around that they were fleas! What the hell? I don’t have any pets so how the heck do I get fleas? Well turns out a number of people in the county have fleas due to not watering our lawns. Oh this poor drought has been blamed for oh so many things.every-flower-must-grow-thro

Anyway  having never dealt with fleas I had absolutely no clue what to do.

So what do I do?

I turn to the internet. I mean where else do you go for information? Right? Of course I posted to Facebook for advice but I also did my own research. But then I realized I had to do something now. As in right now! So I headed over to the store and bought a can of spray – specifically for fleas. Yea it helped. But I knew I needed much more help than that. After all my research I found some powder stuff to put on the lawn and actually in the house. Oh and of course in the car since I had used that to go to the store to get the spray to kill the fleas only to realize I got a ton of them in my car!

So I spent the past week using this powder, vacuuming, spraying, and whatever else I could think of. Every time I stepped outside I ended up with more fleas on me and my pants so what do I do? Yep, before going back in the house I would strip! Ohhhhlala! Ok, so not very exciting and the only one that could possibly see me is my gay neighbor across the street.

I have now washed 5 pairs of jeans about 3 times (in hot water) this past week. Don’t think they have ever been this clean before.

Now at the same time this is all going on I begin to feel…well sort of yuchy! I mean waking up with a head that is about to explode (hey you ever look up “exploding head syndrome”? check it out – it is a real thing), a scratchy throat and being unable to sleep at night due to coughing. Yep…ended up with full on flu! Oh joy!

So things around the house came to a grinding stop as they often do when you feel like crap. Nothing and yea, I really do mean nothing (ok, except washing jeans) has been done around here.

So today I finally felt like joining the living again. Ok, so I couldn’t sleep last night but I still feel a ton better than I have in a week. Today was the day! The day that I would go out and finally take care of my yard.

But…

I step outside and look down and damnit all…my feet are once again covered with those pesky fleas! Well I decided I have had it with them. So I took to the hose and tried to drown them! I washed everything down…I mean really, really well. But I know I still have a few in the house…but not many! Need to go get yet another can (think this will be number 4) of the spray. Yep going to spray the heck out of the house today…after major vacuuming and cleaning.

One thing that helped me get through this week is knowing that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Things happen in life and sometimes there just isn’t anything we can do about it. We just have to deal with it and move on. We just have to go with whatever life hands out to us.

Oh but you know what?

That wasn’t what I was going to tell you about. Not really. What I was going to tell you about is my safety buddy. Oh heck, I’m tired so yea, think I’ll tell you about her in another post.

Hey how was your week? Sure hope it was better than mine! Tell me something good that happened to you this past week or something you did that was super duper fun! Please!! I need some good news.

Joyfully yours,
Kendra

    Hi Kendra
So sorry to read about your troubles. Fleas are the worst. I once had to have a recently purchased home fumigated after the central heating caused fleas to hatch.
I’ve had a great week. Dave and I are planning to put a large 3 bed mobile home on a peice of land up in Washington he inherited. The site is fraught with county planning issues. The main one is a steep slope which needs to be cut into to comply with the set back requirement. Said slope looked really daunting until we cut all the undergrowth back. Dave wielded the hedge trimmer, I set to with shears and loppers. Two days of hard work revealed it is only steep in the middle. I’m already planning a terraced garden.
I love that we get to spend half our time in California and half in the wilds of Washington.

Oh my that must have been a real mess you had on your hands. I have never had fleas and honestly don’t want them ever again!

I’m so glad things are working out with you and Dave. You have such an amazing story to tell.
